a cordial invitation

this is your invitation into the life of a thrifter.  a "thrifter"  (as self-defined) is someone who has devoted a decent amount of time to finding great bargains and treasures in places where some may only see junk.  if you dare to go on this journey with me, i have but a few bits of advice for you to keep in your back pocket whilest you discover the joys of thrifting.

1.  give yourself time: thrift stores and other bargain stores can be overwhelming, but if you give yourself some time to browse, you never know what treat awaits you!

2.  have a goal in mind:  if you know you need some eclectic serving dishes for a party you're throwing, head straight for the kitchen section.  or if you're on the hunt for baby clothes, don't get stuck in the appliances and forget your purpose.  set your goal and stay on track.  as mentioned afore, these places can be daunting.

3.  be patient:  you may not find your first brag-worthy treasure until you've visited several stores.  sometimes i like to set one day out of the month where i hit up 3 or 4 thrift stores, consignment stores and/or yard sales all in one day and just hope to find some gems.  this is an art form, people and you must be patient with yourself and with your vendors.

4.  venture out:  look for things in other areas.  it's so easy to put even ourselves in a box, but challenge yourself to try on something unique (even for you).  or to buy something for your home or as a gift that's unlike anything you've ever seen.  most stuff is under ten bucks anyways, so why not?

5.  stock up:  if you have 5 friends who are pregnant (which i currently do) and you know they're all having baby showers in the next few months, then stock up on essential baby things you will surely find at any thrift store: onesies, books, toys, blankets, footed pajamas, and unique outfits from the 70's!  just make sure you wash everything and sanitize all books and toys (clorox disinfecting wipes work great!).

i'll stop there for now.  my next post will be documenting a REAL trip with me to a thrift store.  so many people ask me how i find the neat things i find at thrift stores (and yard sales and consignment shops) and i suppose it's time to share some secrets!  stay tuned for more...
